The Biodiversity Digital Twin‘s design, implementation, and maintenance present several issues, including the linkage and integration of various data types and related computing services. Consequently, FAIR principles are extremely important, especially during the modelling and prototyping process.

Over the last few months, the BioDT team has been discussing how to understand the FAIRness of the data sources. In particular, the team engaged in improving “Quality of Data, Workflows and Models through FAIR Principles” is tasked with delivering an implementation plan for FAIR Digital Objects over the FAIR data designs of the relevant Research Infrastructures. The team is working to find gaps in understanding FAIR implementation and how it connects to BioDT, even though FAIR principles and the technological elements supporting Digital Twins are not new.

To facilitate discussions around this topic, the BioDT consortium is organising a series of online webinars to stimulate conversations around FAIR with a focus on BioDT and the digital twinning paradigm. Experts and practitioners that deal with different aspects of FAIR implementation and digital twins are invited to join to stimulate discussions that help understand FAIR implementation in a more actionable way.

The second session is taking place on 13 February at 16:00 (CET) and provides an overview of FAIR tools applicable to digital twinning.

Do not hesitate to learn more about this fascinating topic by registering for free!

Tartu, Estonia, 12–16 September 2022.

The theme of this year’s conference is “Biological Invasions in a Changing World”. Biological Invasions are one of the main direct drivers of biodiversity loss worldwide. They pose rapidly growing threat to biodiversity, ecosystem services, sustainable development and human well-being. The challenge of halting biodiversity loss and facing this problem is more and more critical under the circumstances of climate change and it is more than appropriate to discuss these topics together again in the course of another NEOBIOTA conference.

The main organiser of the conference is Estonian Naturalists’ Society that was founded in 1853 and is associating scientists, researchers and nature enthusiasts from various fields: botany, ornithology, entomology, forestry, anthropology, theriology, malacology, ecology, geology, mycology, nature education, citizen science, etc. The main purpose of the ENS is to integrate professional and amateur scientists, and people interested in nature, with the purpose to facilitate exploration of Estonian nature, promoting nature protection and education in Estonia, and popularising results of scientific research. The ENS’s network of trustees all over Estonia allows conducting observations and the application of collected data in scientific research. The Society’s primary work formats are organising scientific studies, conferences, seminars and discussions, tours and nature observations, and carrying out projects for studying nature and on environmental education. The Society publishes both scientific and popular science books, as well as periodical publications, one of the purposes of which is to develop Estonian-language terminology. ENS’s headquarters is situated in Tartu.

Tartu is a city with around 100,000 inhabitants and known as a student city which means a lot of young and sophisticated people working and enjoying life here. Tartu lies on the shores of the beautiful River Emajõgi. There are a plenty of accommodation options with reasonable prices in the city not to mention various opportunites for leisure time in and around Tartu. All kind of useful information about Tartu and Tartu County is available on the official tourism site Visit Tartu.

All along the Belgian and Flemish coasts, 19 March 2022.

Who isn’t fascinated by shells on the beach? Picking up shells, admiring them and trying to find out the story behind the find. And if at all possible, to give science a helping hand at the same time. That is what the Big Seashell Survey is all about!

On Saturday 19 March 2022, the Big Seashell Survey will take place, as part of the LifeWatch Belgium programme. It is the fifth time this citizen science initiative has been organised. In each of the ten coastal municipalities, shell experts will help you collect and identify your hundred beach shells at the counting stations between 10 am and 4 pm. And if hundreds of enthusiasts do this, we all learn a lot more about these fascinating sea creatures. Experience or not, everyone can become a marine citizen scientist for a day!

For the first time this year, comparisons will be made between the shells found on Flemish beaches and those of the Netherlands. On the same day, the natural history museum Naturalis in Leiden will be holding a big seashell survey as well, on the beaches of the coastal province South Holland – as part of the event Leiden2022 – European City of Science. Are you also curious whether we will see big differences?

In addition, families with children can go to three provincial visitor centres (Duinpanne, Raversyde Anno 1465 and ZWIN Nature Park) for a playful introduction to shells (workshop in Dutch only). Afterwards, they will be fully prepared to collect and process a sample of shells at a counting station.

Find more information about this event on www.groteschelpenteldag.be (in Dutch only).

Subscribe now on the website of EOS Iedereen Wetenschapper and receive the newsletter (in Dutch only) with the necessary information and keep up to date on the results (registration is free and not obligatory).

The Big Seashell Survey is an initiative of the Flanders Marine Institute (VLIZ), EOS Wetenschap magazine, the Province of West Flanders, Natuurpunt, Strandwerkgroep, Kusterfgoed and the 10 coastal municipalities. Initiative within the framework of LifeWatch Belgium.
